Wayuu Bags and Patterns

Wayuu Crochet Patterns

The Wayuu women are incredibly talented at crocheting beautiful designs and patterns. To the Wayuu, the patterns tell the story of their culture and way of life. Wayuu women are taught how to crochet at an early age. By the time a Wayuu girl reaches adulthood, they have mastered crochet techniques

The Wayuu women spend most of their time crocheting Wayuu bags. A single wayuu bag can take up to a month or more to complete depending on the crochet pattern. All Wayuu bags are unique and one-of-a-kind.

In addition to crocheting, the Wayuu learn how to weave as well. The straps of the Wayuu Mochila Bags are usually braided by hand. Tightly woven, the straps also carry an interesting design that completes the Wayuu mochila bag.

This Technicolor Mochila Bag is an Instant Mood-Lifter

One of my favorite finds at July's Downtown Flea debut was a new LA-based line called Wayuu Tribe. Founded by a California-born sister and brother, the siblings work directly with the indigenous Wayuu people of South America to produce handmade Mochila bags in a variety of eye-catching patterns and hues. The above version is today's pick, but take one look at their colorful inventory and you'll realize that it's hard to choose just one.

Philanthropy meets fashion as Wayuu Tribe brings a small piece of the South America’s Wayuu people stateside. Hand-woven and meticulously crafted, these bags are the perfect pop of color accessory for any season. Take it to the beach, to a party, or even to the grocery store!  Not only are these bags multi-functional, they are also Fairtrade, and 5% of the proceeds goes to helping improve the lives of the Wayuu people.
